American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification

How to Become an Instructor in 3 easy steps.

To earn your American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification, you must successfully complete a blended learning course that includes online and in-person components.

Step 1: Meet the Prerequisites & Register

  • Must be at least 16 years old by the last day of the instructor course.

  • Must have a current basic-level certification in Adult CPR/AED or higher-level certification from an approved organization (see list below).

  • Register for the First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course.

Step 2: Complete the Online Session

  • Complete the online portion of the instructor course.

  • Review digital course materials available through the Red Cross Learning Center:

    • Find materials under the "Materials" tab and "Instructor Candidate Resources".

    • Optional: Purchase printed materials via the Red Cross Store, accessible from the Learning Center.

Step 3: Attend the Pre-Course Skills Session

  • Successfully complete a hands-on pre-course skills assessment before attending the in-person session.

Step 4: Attend the In-Person Course

  • Successfully complete the instructor-led, in-person session taught by a certified Red Cross Instructor Trainer.

The First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certification is valid for 2 years.
